Qualitative issues - Joel Katz

  • Lines can show borders and join things together
  • Important to use shapes and form in a way that is understandable for people
  • Color has deep meaning and most people can only recognize a few colors - thus it is imperative to use them well
  • Patterns are important when working in grayscale because of increased limitations.
  • There are three generations of labeling
  • The first generation - labeling the object, is often best.
  • It is important to remain consistent in notation for clarity purposes.
Example:

A thing I always found annoying with the maps provided to me by NYU is that they are poorly labeled. For example, not only does this map use 3rd generation labeling, but the legend is sorted in alphabetical order for some reason. This makes it unnecessarily hard to look up a number and what it represents.
